The challengeThe client faced a complex greenfield SAP S/4HANA implementation that required sourcing data from multiple legacy systems, including an existing S/4HANA environment and a separate manufacturing ERP. Rather than pursuing a standard technical upgrade, the organization sought a full ERP reimplementation to improve transparency, modernize data and reporting structures, and align with future business objectives. Migrating the identified source systems introduced significant migration challenges, as standard SAP migration tools did not support direct ingestion from the source systems, requiring a more innovative and carefully reengineered migration strategy to ensure data integrity and continuity.The solutionWith Protiviti’s guidance, the client selected SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) because it provided a single, integrated platform to support both complex data migration and future-state reporting requirements. BDC provides all the necessary tools to extract data from source systems, apply transformations based on mapping logic, and load data into the target system. In combination with the Data Migration Cockpit, BDC served as the ETL tool for populating the staging tables. BDC’s built‑in validation features and flexibility for rapid logic adjustments supported efficient testing and ensured data integrity throughout the migration process.From a reporting standpoint, BDC was chosen to replace legacy reporting tools and establish a modern analytics foundation. Leveraging Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud with prebuilt accelerators content enabled rapid deployment of new reports without disrupting visibility during cutover. Early adoption of BDC also allowed the client to refactor legacy data models and use migration mapping logic to preserve historical data, delivering seamless pass-through reporting and consistent insights across both legacy and new environments.The resultsWhile work continues, this project delivered a scalable, data-first greenfield S/4HANA migration by integrating legacy SAP and non-SAP data through SAP Business Data Cloud and Data Migration Cockpit. Virtualizing data extraction, transformation, and validation reduced migration risk, accelerated testing, and eliminated repeated data loads, while reuse of migration mappings preserved historical reporting from day one. Implementing analytics in parallel with the ERP migration enabled early reporting readiness, controlled cloud consumption costs, and supported clean core principles. Together, this unified migration and reporting strategy reduced rework, improved operational readiness, and positioned the organization for advanced analytics and long-term insight.
