Associate Director

Austin is an Associate Director in the Internal Audit & Financial Advisory Practice based in our Chicago office. He has over 15 years experience serving in various roles of increasing responsibilities in Internal Audit and Compliance for Protiviti and previously, in Big 4 Accounting Firms and Fortune 500 Companies. Austin served as a Director of Internal audit for Walgreens Boots Alliance, and prior to that, as Director of Internal Audit at CHAN Healthcare (now part of Crowe Healthcare Consulting) leading a risk based Internal Audit function at multiple Hospital systems. Austin successfully implemented an enhanced risk based Internal Audit methodology to expand on existing regulatory compliance audit activities in order to drive better risk-management outcomes. Austin also led key process improvement initiatives focused on Revenue Cycle (Order to Cash) process improvements.

KEY PROJECT ROLES

  • Implemented an enhanced enterprise risk assessment process with a goal of complementing existing risk-based compliance activities.
  • Working knowledge of key Healthcare Payer and Provider industry issues and processes, specifically, Claims Processing and Operations, Sales and Broker Management, Provider Contracting, Medicare and Medicaid, Revenue Cycle Management, Health Information Management etc.
  • Managed multiple compliance audits focused on CMS & OIG areas of focus.
  • Provided guidance on new system implementations and other strategic initiatives to ensure internal controls were considered and designed into the process.
  • Led Internal Audit assessment of Sarbanes Oxley compliance plan policies and procedures, working closely with business & corporate function leaders, standardized execution and approach of testing across organization.
  • Worked with business and functional leadership to prepare a risk-based SOX plan. Acted as liaison for coordinating testing between control owners as well as internal & external auditors.
  • Championed and built the approach for walk-throughs and led their successful execution to portray an end-to-end view of the in-scope process to conclude on design of key controls.
  • Drove timely completion of Sarbanes Oxley compliance plan, including administration of project tracking tool, periodic status reporting, and managing coordination among businesses, functions and external auditors.
  • Monitored and evaluated SOX deficiencies and provided SOX status to various committees
  • Successfully implemented changing regulations required by the new COSO guidance of 2013; mapped COSO principles to existing controls set, worked on gap analysis with external consultants and led testing of entity-level controls.
