Due to concerns about potential conflicts of interest in the relationships between physicians and drug and device manufacturers, the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act of 2009 was signed into law on March 23, 2010. Organizations will need to be mindful of the first reporting requirement in March 2013 and get started quickly because compliance will be difficult for many. Moreover, the risk of noncompliance can be costly, so organizations should assess how their risk appetite correlates with the maturity of their compliance programs.
