Professional Experience
Matthew is Managing Director and Protiviti’s Enterprise Risk Management Service Area Leader and a member of the U.S. FSI Leadership Team. His client experience includes major financial institutions, internationally active insurers, specialty finance companies, regional banks, credit card issuers, middle-market commercial lenders and distressed debt purchasers. He has assisted clients in addressing their financial risk management and strategy needs in multiple areas, including credit evaluation, quantitative models, process enhancements, portfolio management and structured finance.
Representative Engagements Include
  1. Managed engagement teams performing assessments and validations of valuation, pricing and estimation models used by financial institutions in managing their consumer exposures and structured products. Project experience includes both the governance and operation of models under review. Assessment standards align with regulatory and leading practices across the financial services industry
  2. Created revenue recognition methodology and model that enabled an independent collections agency to complete an initial public offering. Engagement involved analyzing static pool collection data, modeling pool performance, and creating revenue recognition methodology in accordance with applicable accounting guidance. Defined business requirements for technology solution and oversaw IT development
  3. Developed a comprehensive risk rating methodology for a major credit card company’s merchant services organization, evaluated 100 of the largest US retailers, and supervised the creation of a risk-rating application. Developed portfolio-level risk analysis and monitoring methodologies and reports for the merchant processing group. The engagement included analyzing the organization’s industry risk exposure and performing detailed industry analyses customized to the organization’s exposure
  4. Assessed the credit review function of a top-10 U.S. bank. Areas of coverage included evaluating the unit’s position in the organizational reporting structure, credit review alignment and focus, appropriateness of resources, quality of department output, and effectiveness of credit oversight
  5. Performed assessment of a major North American bank’s small business portfolio and credit operations against Basel II requirements and designed conceptual solution to reach compliance. Areas of focus included risk rating methodology; collateral monitoring operations; and special loans operations
  6. Led engagement teams conducting securitization due diligence reviews on behalf of investors, banks and credit insurance providers. Procedures included reviewing credit operations and strategies; evaluating collection policies, procedures; monitoring collector performance and reviewing reporting. Experience spans asset classes and includes trade receivables, automobile loans, residential mortgages, credit card receivables, vacation ownership finance, commercial loans, insurance premiums and energy receivables
